Conscious sedation is a completely harmless procedure of reduced awareness during dental procedures, controlled by an anesthesiologist.
Conscious sedation is a state of calmness and reduced awareness, fully controlled by the anesthesiologist. It is achieved by administering drugs intravenously, it starts up to ten minutes before dental procedures and lasts throughout the procedure. Consciousness and the ability to breathe consciously and independently are preserved, along with a normal sense of touch and the ability to talk. The feeling of drowsiness disappears very quickly, about twenty minutes after the procedure, with only a partial memory of the previous procedure.
Who needs conscious sedation?
In modern dental practice, conscious sedation has become a common procedure as a safe and effective method of relaxing patients during dental procedures. The procedure is performed by an anesthesiologist in cooperation with a dentist who performs the dental procedure. During the entire duration of sedation, the pulse is controlled by a continuous ECG. Only a partial memory of the previous procedure is possible, and the feeling of drowsiness stops after about twenty minutes.
Conscious sedation can sometimes be arranged for minor procedures, but these must involve multiple extractions and repairs.
Conscious sedation is intended exclusively for patients over the age of 16.
